An Invitation for You

Leadership Thunder Bay is one of 20 programs across Canada.  We are proud to be part of the Canadian Community Leadership Network, affiliated to support the growth and development of each participant.  

LTB's core is its' volunteers - mostly Alumni - who work tirelessly throughout the year to ensure that your experience is always at the height of quality and tailored to your leadership learning objectives.  Our communities become stronger, each time a new graduate commits to sharing their own leadership skills with others.

Leadership Thunder Bay invites you to consider volunteering with us!

The Board of Directors is comprised of Alumni.  We are seeking nominations for the Board, with one vacancy to run until November 2011, with reappointment for a 2 year term.  We may have another position to fill at the AGM in November as well.

(The Board meets monthly for 90 minutes, as well as taking on roles with AdHoc Committees and Strategic Planning initiatives.)

Are you ready to make top level decisions with us?  Let our President, Stewart Kallio know about your interest in serving with the Board.

The Program Committee oversees the design of the Curriculum, decides on content and guest presenters as well as locations for Leadership Learning Days.  A separate Evaluation Committee reviews results and assists with learning objectives.  The Community Action Project (CAP) committee supports the experiential component of the program).

We need:  2 members for the Curriculum Committee (maternity leaves!), and others for Evaluation and CAP/Conference Committee.

The Community Engagement Committee - Alumni!

Would you like to be the Class Representative for 2010-2011? Two of you can share the duties of attending Alumni Meetings (monthly) and helping to plan special events (like the Fireside Chat in November and special luncheons, etc.)

If you are ready to step up as an Alumni/Class Rep or member of Alumni Committee, please let Melanie Zigman, Alumni Chair (or myself) know about your interests.

LTB Goes International!

Korean National World Junior Team visits Anemki*

On Monday July 26th, the Korean National Junior Baseball Team was welcomed to the mountain by Fort William First Nations. Helen Pelletier, Mount McKay Lookout tour group coordinator, organized the site visit and events. Players, coaches, managers and guests gathered to raise a tipi, share freshly prepared blueberry bannock cooked over an open fire, feast on locally caught pickerel, and enjoy the spectacular view from 900 feet above Thunder Bay, Lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant.

LTB Alumni Step Up To The Plate

The visit was orchestrated by Leadership Thunder Bay’s (http://www.leadershiptb.com/) Alumni who were delighted to host the team during their visit to Thunder Bay. Alumni Chair, Melanie Zigman, did a fantastic job of organizing the entire event including preparing food for everyone with the help of her volunteer committee.  Melanie is applauded for her dedication, drive, commitment and endless energy. A big thank you also goes out to all the alumni, CAP team and supporters who came out to help,  donated money to help cover the costs for this event.
Leadership Thunder Bay through one of its 2008/2009 Community Action Projects (CAP) served an important role in helping the World Juniors Planning Committee prepare for the event.

According to alumnus Nancy Kos, “Our CAP Project was to match community organizations/groups, as hosts for each of the teams coming to Thunder Bay to participate in World Juniors Baseball in 2010... this one year commitment, quickly evolved into two, and a wonderful opportunity to work with my CAP team from start to finish...special thanks to LTB for giving us such a challenging project - one we met with trepidation in the beginning, and such a sense of accomplishment at the end.”

Alumnus Rob Berardi adds, "When my group chose the World Juniors, I felt a bit overwhelmed with the magnitude of the project. I really didn't think that we would be able to meet the goals that were established for the Hosting program by the Thunder Bay International Baseball Association.

However, after meeting Warren Philp, the executive director of TBIBA, I was infected with his enthusiasm for the World Championships and his vision for Thunder Bay as a World Class stage for similar events in the future.

Leadership Thunder Bay provided me the opportunity to be part of and contribute to the World Juniors Baseball Championships during my time in the program, and I continued thereafter as a volunteer. The host program for the World Juniors provided me with great networking opportunities, and a sense of community commitment to really show case what Thunder Bay is all about. It's great to see so many community organizations "step up to the plate."

* Did you know:  Mount McKay, originally known as the "Thunder Mountain" (Animikii-wajiw), is used by the Ojibwe people for sacred ceremonies. Non-First Nations people were allowed access to the mountain after the construction of a road.
